Personal essay
by Jean Yu (05-10-1997)

Throughout my life, it seems I have
been alternately afflicted and blessed.  As a student of Tae Kwon Do, I have
struggled under the watchful eye of my instructor and under the expectations of
being the instructor’s daughter.  However, more importantly, I have been
blessed – endowed with an innate discipline that comes from Grandmaster Yu’s
roots.  Through training, I have developed that discipline, which has allowed
me to accomplish my goals both on and off the mat.

          What began, for a five-year
old, as an exercise regimen, a memorization of movements, techniques, and
terminology, has developed into a journey of personal development.  No other
sport could have instilled in me more self-respect, respect for seniors, and
obedience to teachers and parents.  I have seen my family relationships to have
always thrived because of the respect I have been taught.

I have seen, as well, a
better preparation, mentally, in my endeavors outside of martial arts.  In
school, I was able to take on large responsibilities and make the most of my
studies because I had learned discipline and perseverance.  Certainly
determination and respect for authority play bigger roles in one’s academic
success than mere numbers.

          The biggest influence
martial arts have had on my life has been its tenant of integrity.  Strength of
character is the foundation of the ancient philosophy, “Myong shim bo gam,” and in “do,” way of life.  Without integrity, I would not be
where I am today nor would have fulfilled all that I wanted to accomplish.  My
years of Tae Kwon Do set the foundation for my personal growth in all aspects
of life.  Its effect has been immeasurable
