Essay –Doug Evans for 4th Dan Testing

Like many students, I started Martial
Arts with no thought about how long or far I would go in my training. Over the years it has been challenging to
find time for training and study. Not
only have I developed some physical skills, I have acquired very good friends. I have also learned some things along the
way.
The training of the body has limits. This I have found to be so true on my
occasions. There have been a number of
injuries. It takes longer to recover
now. The lessons learned about physical
training are to always take time to warm up and stretch, and be patient with
certain techniques.
I have learned the value of
perseverance. As mentioned, I never
thought about staying in Martial Arts as long as I have. I consider myself among the fortunate to be
able to stay involved, long enough to achieve something that relatively few of
us will achieve. I hope that I can live
up to the expectations that will be expected of me in the future by Grandmaster
Yu, the instructors and students at Yu’s Academy.
I have found a great source of
encouragement in our instructors. There
have been times when I have felt like I was all thumbs, and simply not capable
of performing. Nothing bothers me more
on the mat than to be standing there with a totally blank mind, unable to
remember what comes next. Not only does
that make me feel inadequate, I don’t enjoy letting down my workout
partner. However, as a good friend told
me, I cannot allow my thoughts and concentrations to be effected by other
people. Furthermore, I was advised to take
my time. This is after, Martial Arts,
something that follows certain rules, but ultimately becomes an expression of
us. As we are all different, we all will
perform different. I know that each of
us are supportive of each other. That is a relationship we are fortunate to
have.
I am grateful to Grand Master Yu for
not writing me off. He has always been
patient and made me feel welcome even after a prolonged absence. Thank you Grandmaster Yu.
As I face this testing day, it is
truly one of the more challenging tasks I have had to do in years. If successful, I will be honored to wear the
rank, and strive to perfect my skills to be worthy of it.
