Chapter
10 –항상 마음을 반성하도록 힘쓰라.

                 
Always try to self-examine your mind and thinking.

 

널리 배우고 뜻을 독실히
하고, 간절히 묻고 잘 생각하면, 인(仁) 은 그 가운데 있다. 아는 것을 안다고 하고 모르는
것을 모른다고 하는 것, 이것이 진정으로 아는 것이다.

If you admit that
you don’t understand
something, and if you admit that you know something, this is true knowledge.
Ask questions and learn if you don’t know something.

 

사람이 배우지 않는
것은 재주도 없이 하늘에 오르려는 것과 같다. 배워서 지혜가 멀리 미치면, 상서로운 구름을 헤치고 푸른 하늘을 보는 것 같고, 높은 산에 올라 사해(四海) 를 보는 것과 같다.

Don’t expect success if you are not
willing to work and learn. Learning and education will forge a clearer path for
success.

 

옥 (玉) 은 다듬지 않으면 그릇을 이루지 못하고, 사람은
배우지 않으면 옳음을 알지 못한다.

Even if you have
great intelligence, you must have a clean kind soul. Thus, you can use your
knowledge for the greater good.

 

정의를 떠난 지식은
지식이 아니라 교활한 지혜다.

Without a proper
education, you cannot steer your life in a smooth ways. Ignorance leads to
mistakes, errors, and blunders.

 

사람이 배우지 아니하면
캄캄한 밤길을 가는 것과 같다.

Knowledge is like a light.
Without it, you merely walk ignorantly in the dark.

 

사람이 고금 (古今) 에 통달하지 못하면 마소에 옷을 입힌 것과 같다.

You must learn
regardless of how poor, rich, etc…You are. All humans were born for knowledge
and virtue without it; we are merely animals in clothing.

 

집이 만일 가난할지라도
가난함으로 인하여 배움을 피해서는 안 되고, 집이 만일 부유할지라도 부유함을 믿고 배움을 게을리 해서는
안 된다. 가난한 사람이 부지런히 배우면 가히 몸을 세울수 있고, 부유한
사람이 부지런히 배우면 이름이 이에 빛날 것이다. 배우는 사람이 출세하는 것은 보았으되, 배우는 사람이 이루지 못하는 것은 보지 못했다. 배우는 것은 곧 몸의 보배요,
배운 사람은 곧 세상의 보배다. 그러므로 배우면 이에 군자가 되고,
배우지 아니하면 소인 되나니, 후세의 배우는 사람들은 마땅히 각자 힘써야 할 것이다.

Learning pertains to
everybody – rich or poor.

You must learn when
you are young, or you will later regret it. You must always have good effort
and a will to do things to be truly successful.

 

배우기를 미치지 못한
것 같이 하고, 오직 잃을까 두려워해야 한다.

The more you learn,
the more questions you will have. The more you learn, the more you become
curious. When we become curious, we see the need to learn even more.
