1st Dan Black Belt Essay (5-12-2018)

Taekwondo-A
Passion in my Heart

By
Evalyn Yu

Ever
since I was 5 years old, my grandfather has been teaching me a sport called
Taekwondo. In Taekwondo, you learn how to kick, block, punch, and do poomsae.
You also learn many other important things such as respect, self-confidence,
and self-defense. You get good exercise, improve your flexibility, and learn
how to protect yourself from things that might hurt you. There are also many
belts in Taekwondo. While I keep growing and learning Taekwondo, my belt colors
change. From a beginner white belt, I have now transformed into a black belt
who can protect herself. When I see a recording of my first lesson playing on
the TV screen, I smile and think about how much progress I’ve made through the
past three and a half years. When I was just starting Taekwondo, I couldn’t
kick high or break a board without thinking that it was too hard or wanting to
cry. While doing Taekwondo, those skills improved a lot. Even though I am now a
black belt, I still have my passion for Taekwondo in my heart, and I will never
give it up.

          Though
I have many other hobbies, Taekwondo is definitely one of my favorite sports. I
especially enjoy breaking boards, doing poomsae with my cousins, having a belt
test, and going to tournaments. Through the past three and a half years, I
learned to not be afraid of problems and that I should be confident instead. I
also learned that I should only focus on myself so I would not get carried
away by looking at someone else. Another important lesson that I learned was
that you don’t need to be perfect, but you should always try your best!

          I also find
Taekwondo to help me bond with my sister and two cousins better. We always have
fun and play games before and after Taekwondo practice. I always feel like I
have more fun when my cousins William and Abby are here to play and laugh with
us during Taekwondo. Now, whenever my dad tells us “Hey! Allison and Evalyn!
We’re going to your grandparent’s house!" The first thing out of my mouth
usually is “Are William and Abby coming too?”

          There
are more important life-long lessons that my amazing and patient grandfather
taught my sister and me, such as ‘What is the Meaning of Life?’ and that we
should always try our best at everything that we attempt. He always makes sure
that we are doing well in Taekwondo and excelling in everything else that there
possibly could be!

          I
love Taekwondo, and I love my grandfather. He is an amazing and wonderful Taekwondo
teacher and grandpa, and I shall always remember him as the person who brought
Taekwondo into my life.
